Meet Suzanne Purtee, our new Choirmaster and Organist

Dear St. Paul’s parishioners,

After a year-long interim and deliberate period of discernment, I am pleased to announce that Ms. Suzanne Purtee has accepted the call to serve as our next Organist/Choirmaster.

I had the pleasure of working with Suzanne while I was a curate at Church of the Nativity in Huntsville, Alabama. Suzanne served at Nativity nine years before taking an intentional hiatus from parish music ministry. She taught me much of what I know about Anglican chant, and is especially gifted at working with both professional and volunteer vocalists.
Suzanne will be moving to San Antonio, where she has family connections, from Grafton, Massachusetts. After moving halfway across the country, Suzanne will start in the office on Wednesday, July 5th. Her first Sunday directing and playing the organ will be Sunday, July 9th.

I would be remiss if I did not thank the generous and capable musicians who have assisted during this interim period: Dr. Tom Lee, Christian Cruz, Scott Flanagan, Rilda Baker, and Michelle Sirois have kept the choir running smoothly. I would also like to thank Beverly Wong, Nathan Busse, Kelly Bender, and Scott Flanagan for assisting with this search as members of the Music Discernment Group.

The music ministry is one of our “hallmark ministries” here at St. Paul’s. If you would like to get more involved summer is a great time to dive in. July at St. Paul’s will include an all volunteer choir, giving the Choral Scholars a summer break. Your voice is needed, “joining our voices with Angels and Archangels and with all the company of heaven.”

Below you can find a photograph of Suzanne, as well as some interesting information about her. We will have the opportunity to welcome her to San Antonio and St. Paul’s this month.

Grace & peace,
