Adult Forum – Addiction Series

October 14 @ 9:15 am - 10:15 am

|Recurring Event (See all)

An event every week that begins at 9:15am on Sunday, repeating until October 14, 2018

Beginning September 23 – “A Course on Addiction”
A four week series facilitated by various parishioners and guests, including Linda Cook and Eleanor Stromberger.

We all know people who struggle with drug addiction and perhaps their life has been ruined. If we have never struggled with this, the behavior of an addict may seem incomprehensible. Why don’t they just buckle down and quit?

We now have more medical knowledge about how drugs hijack the brain so that someone pursues drug use to the exclusion of everything else. The brain is tricked into harmful behavior.

This lecture deals with understanding the features of abuse, dependence and craving, why some people become addicted and others don’t, the role of genetics, how drugs affect the brain, the science of specific drugs, America’s opioid epidemic and the obstacles to effective treatment.

September 30-Addiction and the Human Spirit
Led by the Rev. Dr. Joseph Webb

A retired clinical psychologist, Fr. Joseph will guide us toward a deeper understanding of the psychological and spiritual aspects of addiction.

October 7–Recovery I
October 14–Recovery II
Led by Eleanor Stromberger-Diocesan Recovery Ministries
“Alcoholism, drug dependency, co-dependency, eating disorder and other addiction affect many persons in our diocese. We believe that shame about these diseases, combined with a lack of information and knowledge of resources, keeps many people from receiving the help and treatment that is available. We are committed to reducing the shame and offering hope through on-going awareness and education….”  Purpose Statement, Commission on Recovery Ministries
